On a habitable, resource-rich planet lives a civilization of machines endowed with artificial intelligence, guarding dark secrets. Though few robots care about the details of existence, a self-appointed class masters the techniques of programming and does everything to seize control of the planet through the code they write — the Engineers.
Unit 27, the supervisor of a mining team, watches the changes in society and their consequences passively — until the day it stumbles upon an intriguing discovery that changes how it perceives the world.
It finds the possibility of bringing its own changes to society's programming, and this displeases the planet's administration, which sends Daarsy — the powerful virtual assistant of the Engineer Administrator — to interfere directly in the fate of this robot and its discovery. But Daarsy proves more independent than the administrator imagined, leaving everyone uncertain about her true intentions toward the new discovery.
